The partnership between Kandara Boer Goat Stud and Mericol
Stud has been responsible for establishing many other successful
Boer goat studs throughout Australia.
Recognised
as the leader in Australia to obtain top Boer breeding stock,
Mericol have studs and overseas buyers clambering for selection.
Mericol are very generous, with fair dinkim buys who want
to buy the best animals available from the farm. All animals
are for sale.
Most
leading south South African Studs are represented in the Mericol
Bloodlines.
In
the first purchase Nico Batha does and bucks were introduced
with fantastic success in 1996. An embryo transfer program
expanded the number of extremely high quality animals.
In
the same year, wanting to succeed as the leading stud in Australia,
Mericol introduced embryos from Theuns Batha Kanfotein Stud,
the home of Tommy, the most successful sire of his time in
South Africa. In 1992, this successful Sire Tommy had 34 kids
and grand kids in one show, and won the second highest number
of points. This is the first time this had been done by the
first and second generation off spring of one Sire “Tommy”.
As
a result of this embryo program, Kids were born with length
and tremendous bone and muscle. The most encouraging finding was that the correctness in legs and pastens. This
stamped a future correct breeding program.
In
2000, embryos were selected from Boetie & Stephan Malam.
The does were of very high quality, and mated to only two
excellent Sons of Vlek. These sires were “Limo”,
presently Eastern Cape Champion Buck in South Africa, and
“Apple”. These two bucks showed in the kids to
have extreme length with tremendous bone and meat carrying
qualities. Many of these animals were sold throughout Australia,
and New Zealand.
Next a visit to
South Africa to select embryo’s from the country’s
two leading breeders. To further improve Mericol Stud, Nico
Batha and Lukas Berger were the prime objectives, and 300 beautiful
kids resulted from the venture. We currently have offspring
by these magnificent does.
The Boer Goat
can be thought of as the bonus breed. It makes
use of feed which otherwise would have gone to waste such
as thistle, blackberry and many woody species normally requiring
chemical spraying, and this does allow more valuable grasses
to dominate and produce better pasture for other animals to
graze along with the goats.
The Boer goat is a very likeable and
intelligent animal and have looked after our business for the past 8 years, and therefore we are most grateful.
